"Top Class Alpaca to be Raffled at Fiesta" A major and innovative feature of the coming Hawkesbury-Blue Mountains Alpaca Fiesta will be the raffle of a top-class female. The fiesta is a venture of the Hawkesbury-Blue Mountains region of the Australian Alpaca Association and covers an area of some 50km west and north west of Sydney. The female is Gunnamatta Emily, a 13-month by the US-bred Peruvian Drambuie. Emily will be raffled and, while not joined, she will be ready for service. Sue Maynard's Gunnamatta Stud was established in 1993 with the purchase of the original Chilean import Fernleigh White Lady. Other females were secured, while four young sires came from Purrumbete Stud in Victoria. Signal success came in the show ring in 1994 as a result of progress with a well thought-out breeding programme. Sue Maynard runs her 50 alpacas on five acres near Galston, essentially an outlying suburb of Sydney. She is battling to keep numbers at a manageable level. Sales depend on publicity gained, and Sue joins with other alpaca breeders to hold regular open days, or field days, which have proved most successful at spreading the message and, in consequence, the genes. The current senior sire is Purrumbete D'Artagnan, a six-year-old who has bred exceptionally. One of his daughters was champion female at the most recent Central Coast (NSW) Spring Show at Kariong. Sue has a keen passion for the alpaca industry in Australia, as she has been involved since the early nineties. She shows her animals regularly, attending various shows across the State and has enjoyed her fair share of success with ribbons.
