(Poem Style: Limmerick)

There once was a hermie called Keach
She lived in a turbo that’s Peach
She could stop traffic dead
With the wave of her cheliped
And scuttle her way to the beach

(to the tune of "The wonderful thing about Tigger")

Oh the wonderful thing about hermies,
For hermies are wonderful things,
These crabs that come out each nightime,
Whose antics will tickle heartstrings,
Such weird crustaceans -
from all nations -
give you fun,fun fun

The only not-so-good thing 'bout hermies is
Ive got only one,
Ive... got only one!

(actually, Ive got two, but one won't come out)

This is my entry into the poetry contest.
It's an italian sonet for my recently
departed "favorite" crab.

Ode to TinyBabette

TinyBabette you were my smallest crab,
So delicate thin was your sheltered home,
A place to live for a moment on loan
From a snail already departed. Drab
Was not your chosen shell. Grand was your cab
To travel and dwell. So far not much grown,
Not having much chance to learn or to roam,
Your life was spent principally at my pad.
Now you reside in that tank in the sky
Never again to suffer or fear a molt,
Never to grow past diminutive size.
I never imagined that you might die
But in mourning for you I had to bolt
For now I can never look in your eyes.

Houdini

Where did he go,
O dear I don't know.
He is gone again,
He is quicker than sin.
First I see him,
Then I don't.
O here he is in the sand,
Shoo man o man.
Thought I lost him again.

HERMIE IN THE SNOW

On a cold wind-blowing day,
Was born a baby hermie,
So tiny and so sweet,
Just beginning his life journey.

Born within the ocean,
And little did he know
That just up ahead of him
Was a mountain topped with snow.

As he wondered slowly from the water,
Wind blowing on his naked bum
He looked around for a shell
and tried to find his mum.

Instead of a tropical beach ahead,
with places to run and go,
was a great mountain so frightfully high,
with inches of freezing snow.

"I'll have to climb that mountain,"
Thought the hermie in his mind
"And once I reach the top,
I'll find a shell for my behind."

He noticed other crabs around him,
Attempting to scale the great hill,
But they could walk only sideways,
Which gave him much more will.

He took a few steps back,
His heart started to race,
The other crabs were watching,
As he fell flat on his face!

The others started giggling,
He took a deep breath inside,
And took a few more steps backwards,
They'll never break his pride.

He started to run again,
Using all the energy he had
His legs were like a blur,
And he went up the hill a tad.

"Keep going, keep going" he thought,
His body filled with will,
He was really making progress
Up the snowy mountain hill.

The top was drawing nearer,
The hermie puffed and groaned,
His energy was getting lower,
His legs wearing down to the bone.

"Just a little bit more" said the hermie,
As he gave all he had and strived,
He made it to the top of the hill,
His mother waiting to give a high five!

"Horray my son, you made it!"
Said mum, to tiny hermie,
"Thanks for having the courage,
And waiting here just for me!"

"No problem my son, it was worth it,
and I have here a big suprise!"
Behind her was a beautiful shell,
The tiny hermie couldnt believe his eyes!

"Oh mum it looks so lovely,
It will suit me oh-so well!"
"Thankyou mother" he said gratiously,
As he slipped into the shell.

How the tiny hermie made it to the top?
We may never know,
But hand-in-hand, the hermies walked
Away from the mountain of snow.

Adoption Poem

Marie Davis wrote:

I went to the pet store to adopt a hermie,
Their living conditions made me squirmy.
All the hermies were gathered in the water dish,
Looking to me as they had one true wish.
Hoping for a life that they once had,
Made me feel extremely very sad.
The best I could do was to rescue a few,
So I took them home for some dechlorinated brew.
Each received a stresscoat bath,
All their actions made me laugh.
To see them scoot around the tub,
Each one receiving an over due scrub.
Now they're lively and full of spunk,
Forever ridden of the pet stores gunk.

THE STORY OF HOW HERMIT CRABS GOT THEIR SHELL

Long, long ago on an island far away
There played a pair of baby crabs, Ernie and Fay.
They were crustaceans with a tail so soft and curved
Self-conscious, a bit, they felt--
their tail made them unnerved.

Observing the pretty shells washed up upon the beach,
"They ought to be recycled!" Fay began to preach.
"I cannot stand to see these seashells go to waste,
Come on, Ernie, let us find a use for them with haste!"

They gathered all they could, but wondered to what avail
"I know!" Ernie cried, "Let's put them up for sale!"
"We cannot sell God's handiwork," Fay said decidedly
"But I think they will be useful to our friends, and you, and me."

"Our abdomens!" Ernie screamed, as he realized Fay's conviction
"We'll wear them on our tails and use them as protection!"
From that day forward hermit crabs were never quite the same
Now they all wear seashells--and that is how they got their name.

My Companion

As the end of the day approaches,
I sit and stroke my hermie
I tell  it how the day has gone,
and it sits and listens attentively
Those big brown eyes so endearing,
little antenna wiggling
It doesn't matter if I'm not perfect
It accepts me for who I am
When I come in after a hard days’ work
My hermie is ready to play
It looks forward to our time together
Sitting and talking each day
Ever loving, ever trusting
Such a sweet little thing
No matter what tomorrow brings
We'll face it together
My friend, my companion
My hermie and me
